Jan Fabre is just as known for his theatre works and visual arts as he is for his theatre texts and night diaries. These have been translated into over 15 languages and have enthralled art, theatre & dance lovers alike.
Jan Fabre writes his theatre texts predominantly with a view to staging. The plays are both conceptual in nature and poetic. They materialise ancient rituals and themes that fascinate the author, as well as philosophical questions that obsess him. Several of his theatre texts are written as personal manifestos, on what it means to be an artist. They also illustrate his thinking about theater: theater as a total work of art in which the word is given a well-considered, functional place alongside parameters such as dance, music, opera, performance elements and improvisation. The restraint with which Fabre uses text demands a new way of making theater. Future generations of directors who work with these texts will also be able to extract everything but conventional theater methods from them.
Jan Fabre is the author of a series of intimate Night Diaries, starting in 1978 until today. In a few short lines, written daily, they give a unique insight into the mind of an artist, his evolution, his questions, his views and his experiences. From the first Night Diary (Published in 2011), captured in the pages are his artistic processes, a bottomless curiosity and an unwavering faith in the power of beauty.
